FDH Bank plc has given K1.5 million to the Association of Environmental Journalists (AEJ) as a contribution towards the association’s green awards to be held during its annual general meeting.

In an interview after presenting the cheque in Blantyre last Wednesday, FDH Bank plc public relations officer Lorraine Chikhula said the AEJ awards initiative designed to stimulate progressive and creative environmental journalism that inspires the present and future societal needs, resonates with the bank’s strategy; hence, the donation.

She said: “As a responsible home-grown corporate citizen, we have FDH Cares as our sustainability programme with our environment being one of its pillars.

“We know that the environment supports trees which provide oxygen and support various inhabitants for animals and livelihood for humans. More importantly, they mitigate climate change.”

Chikhula said the Malawi Stock Exchange-listed bank is delighted to partner AEJ in collaborative efforts that seek to encourage all Malawians and the media to preserve and protect the environment.

“We believe this is the beginning of a fruitful partnership with the association and that we will continue to collaborate in future endeavours,” she said.

On her part, AEJ vice-president Wezi Nyirongo thanked FDH Bank plc, saying the donation will facilitate a successful meeting.

“We know that most institutions, including banks have been hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, but it takes a true partner like FDH Bank to render a hand during a crisis,” she said.

Nyirongo said the money will be used to buy prizes such as camera, laptops and trophies for winning journalists. The meeting will be held in Lilongwe from September 19 to 21 under the theme Greener, Stronger, Together.
